Yahweh Tsidkenu: The Lord Our Righteousness

Yahweh Tsidkenu was the name given by God in the book of Jeremiah for the Messiah. It means “The Lord Our Righteousness.”  The character of the Messiah that Israel was waiting for was righteousness.  He would gather Israel from all the lands of the earth and he would rule over them.  He would be a righteous shepherd and they would call him, “The Lord Our Righteousness”.  Listen to what Jeremiah said Jeremiah 23:5-6,

The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land.  In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety.  This is the name by which he will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness.

So, what does it mean that The Lord Our Righteousness?

  1. First, it means ours standing before God is perfect because of who Christ is in us.  In a practical way that means we don’t have to work to obtain our salvation or keep our salvation.  Our salvation is made complete in who Christ is in us. Romans 8:29

  1. Second, it means we have been made holy because of the Christ Righteousness in us. Have you ever felt that you can’t live the Christian life?  If you have, that’s right where you need to be. You see, God never asked you to live the Christian life apart from Him. He wants to be your strength, He wants to live the Christian life through you and do for you what you could never do for yourself.  I Peter 1:16

  1. Third, it means Christ also leads us practically into new righteousness every day.  We call it practical righteousness.  Through practical righteousness we are daily being conformed into His image.  Psalm 23:3

The Lord is our Righteousness.
